Elaborate please. What exactly didn't work for you with SketchUp?
I've been using SketchUp for a couple of years. I find it to be tailor
made for quick presentations. More detailed presentations require
porting the SketchUp model into a rendering program.

I'd like to know as well, maybe we can help you with Sketchup. Also, their
forums are filled with good info and tips, even rendering techniques. But,
if your looking for something for rendering purposes for work, I would
suggest you stick to open source. Even Google Sketchup is not for
commercial use.

Rhino isn't free. I also found it difficult to use, and much prefer
trueSpace - also not free but the company does still sell the older
versions for a very reasonable price.

Of course the took away some options in Google Sketchup so that you would
buy Sketchup Pro, I think mainly the output rendering comes out at higher
resolutions, and there's a few extra features as well. It's totally worth
$500, IMO.

| I totally agree - Sketchup is great for quick presentations and you can
get as detailed as you want. The tutorials help and you can also take
Sketchup classes when they come to your city.
You can also download a ton of components to use in your models from
Formfonts.com at a really reasonable price.

I prefer to use 3D Studio Max. It's a great pogram made for modeling,
and there are unlimited lighting/textures effects for materials.

| I think, after a little bit time Rhinoceros become more usefull, then other
software.
The freedome that it give you is incredible.
Maybe the problem is the first impact with it, but i know people that passed
from 3dmax throw rhino, and now they are complitely sotisfied.
Ok can't make presetation, but can you part program for it.....
Sketh up is no good, you need a good modeller!!

They're capable, but I prefer icon-driven GUIs as opposed to nested
menus - I can never remember menus because my memory is primarily
visual. But icons I can remember very easily. Plus, at 1600X1200
screen resolution, you can keep several classes of icons open and still
have lots of space form modeling. Well, OK, I just hate menus ;)

| I heard some good things about Rhinoceros. That may be what I checkout.

I use 3ds max and/or viz.
I'm currently drooling on Maxwell Renderer. It has issues. But...

Jeff reminds me to amend my post - I do much of my architectural
modeling in AutoCAD.

A point that has pretty much not been addressed is the renderer. You
asked "modeling" and people mostly responded "modeling". But there's
more to presentation than just modeling. Rendering is particularly
important. I use 3ds max and kinda hate it but I'm getting better.
Looking at other people's work indicates that my hating max may be me
and not it. Maxwell is, as noted, gorgeous but has it's limits.
www.cgarchitect.com has a lot of support for vray in its gallery. The
interface for the Illustrate plugin to 3ds is a little annoying but the
results are top notch. I'd love to play more with NPR Reyes, but I'm
not about to pay for it for reasons of trust until I have mad money.
Piranesi may be just the thing for some people.
