Post modern was essentially classical simplified with the color put back
(yes, ancient buildings were painted). Then, Frank Gehry hit on the idea of
a pile of wet cardboard spray painted silver...why didn't WE think of that?

How about a pile of sticks with smoke coming off it? An ice jamb painted
purple? Breast-shaped twin towers? A museum shaped like a toilet? Oops,
Wright already did that.

Read an excellent series of articles on how the "post-modern" wasn't
"post" at all. Sad to say, the details didn't stick.

There is nothing classical about post modern. It is primarily mannerist
in spirit. Venturi, in his 'Complexity and Contradiction' (the
post-modern 'manifesto'), was looking at Baroque architecture, at
Palazzo del The, Giulio Romano and the distorting of the classical (for
the sake of complexity and contradiction). Unfortunately, making
'in-jokes' about about a decorative program that people know little to
anything about means most of the effort is lost. A visit to Palazzo del
The and reading up on the paintings Giulio did for his prince buddy
drives that point home fairly strongly. What would have seemed
fantastically inspiring to them back in the 15th century comes off as
utterly anachronistic to us, which means that the charm of the effort
and its effect is lost (mostly: if you're a conneiseur, you'll 'get
it').
