I like using those as holiday lights because they don't get nearly as
tangled up as the usual light strings. Something I've been thinking og
doing with rope lights is, setting a long string at the back of the
"shelf" (about 1' by 1') that goes around two walls of the 2-storey
den/family room. There is a ceiling fan with 4 lights hanging down, but
I hate direct overhead lighting and think the indirect light from a rope
light (or similar item) might look interesting.
It's also a possible type of landscape lighting, since the things are
designed to be used outdoors, but I haven't thought up any sort of
possible plan - it's just an idea in the back of my mind.
I also use one short (2') string as a "keyboard shelf" light - it's
under the lip that goes around the front openings of the desk, and the
shelf rolls in and out. The light illuminates the keyboard directly,
which is excellent. Use the same soort of setup in the CD area of the
credenza (or whatever it's be called) that houses the compact stereo and
whatnot (no TV in that room, so the top holds a chest my Dad had made,
and so other chachkies). I'm also considering putting up a string one
the inside perimeter of the covered pation in the back (I think it'd
only be called a proch if it was fence or somehow closed in - but I
don't know for sure what makes something a "porch" as opposed to a
"covered patio"; perhaps it's height, where a porch is up off the ground
and a covered patio is a ground-level patio with a roof over it). THere
is an ugly box-light in the ceiling right now, but I'm strongly
considering putting an outdoor-rated ceiling fan in its place (it's
blocked for one). Between that and rope lights, I think it'd be kind of
nice. Esp. if I can get some sort of screen up <g!>
Anyhoo, the point is that IMO the rope lights can be good for a number
of situations where *some* lighting, for effect, is desired, without
having to deal with the annoyance of light strings or the more usual
over-bright fixtures made for installation into walls, ceilings, and so
on. Also, the color is more neutral - light strings seem to only come
in green.
