Shoot them now! Or they'll be back to snack on your landscaping.

| We are just outside the city limits. I think I can take them out of
season if they're on my property. Looks like I'll be eating a steady
diet of deer jerky!

After viewing the PBS documentary, 'Frankensteer', I'm envious.

Leave them alone already.
If you want some food go to the store, sheesh.
We had 4 in the yard yesterday, getting to be a habit.
Might have something to do with that 50 pound block of salt I put on a stump
down at the far end of the yard.
(my wife, bless her soul, put a bucket of water next to the salt.....in case
they get thirsty!)
I ate deer meat long ago and didn't like that *gamey* flavor it had.

He could also use plants that deer don't like to eat. Maybe plant one or
two "sacrificial shrubs" as well.
We used to get a few at teh Masachusetts house, because it backed onto an
unbuildable area (can't bring myself to call it "conservation land" because
they didn't dpo squat about the fact that it was overrun with garbage like
purple loosestrife and chinese bittersweet...). The fawns were kind of
neat. Got all sorts of wildlife there; I used stones from the property to
build up some hiding places for small frogs/toads, garter snakes, and the
like. Which is part of the joy IMO of low- to -no-maintenance plantings
Anyway, there are ways to deter wildlife other than shooting anything that
moves.

Up here, deer are simply long legged rats. They do lots of property
damage...they're out of control. They really are destroying the forests.
We need a couple of years of "open season." No limits, no dates...just
harvest as many as you possibly can. Maybe the population can be
trimmed down to acceptable levels...

| 3D, you almost sound like you're from *MY* neck of the woods. You in
Wisconsin?
I agree, just like pigeons are rats with wings, deer are long legged
rats, like you said. I actually like the aesthetic aspects of having
deer around, but when we start landscaping, I may need to invest in a
giant can of Deer-Be-Gone=AE or something.

OK, that makes your suggestion more understandable.
This is occurring in a lot of areas. The "animal lovers" get hunting
banned - and then what happens is the problems you mention, *plus* the
animals suffer because of malnutrition (too many mouths, not enough
food) and die of starvation.
Responsible hunters, I mean people who are real hunters, not just idiots
who go out and shoot animals for the hell of it, are conservationists
and also do not randomly shoot at stuff. One shot, one kill. That's
the type of hunter that my father was, and that his father was.
The loudly-self-proclaimed "animal lovers" seldom have much
understanding of nature or natural history. Like the types who give
their dogs *vegetarian* dog food...if you can't handle the fact that
predators are a vital part of nature, do not have a predator as a pet.
Of course, he sould still use deer-resistant plants, too ;)

Them critters were here/there 1,000's or millions of years
before I was, and I hope they will be for that long after my
temporary existance ends.

Great idea! But other, not so welcome critters
like porkypines might hunker down for a lick.
In Muskoka in the winter they like to tibble on
snowmobiles for the salt. Let me/us know if
anything other than deer like it?
TIA

Stewed moose is nice, cooked all day.

Don't call me Shirley...neither do I joke. We're having problems with
conifer forests starting up again...the deer eat the tops of saplings
which stunts/kills the trees. After people cut down all the conifers,
the softwoods/hardwoods moved in which are sustained by the deer eating
the young conifers.
It's pretty well documented in MN that the deer are a real ecological
problem. They're far out of balance.

Didn't say get rid of ALL of them...only said we need to bring the
population down to "sustainable" (I really hate that word) levels.

| Get a keg of Pabst Light and invite 10 friends over to help get rid of it.
Then piss all along your property line.
No sane deer, or human, will dare to venture within 300 meters of that
sacred piss line.
This line will only last about a week so you and your compadres will have to
do it all over again the following weekend.
I know, I know, lifes a XXXXX.......then you marry one.........
