| Found this group while on my lunch break here at work, thought I'd
introduce myself.
My name is Katie, I'm an architecture undergrad student. Currently I'm
located on the Central Coast of California, but I go to school in
Berkeley. From what I can tell, this group is pretty active and you all
know a lot, but at the same time have a good sense of humor. I'm not
sure what I can add knowledge-wise, as I haven't been at this long, but
nonetheless I look forward to talking w/you all =3D)

Hello there Katie. Where on the Central Coast are you? I live in Southern
California, but went to school at CalPoly SLO. It's a great architecture
school, I'm surprised you didn't go there being on the cnetral coast.
Welcome, and try not to piss Don off .

Anyone who writes, "you all know a lot" has got to be
FLW the 2nd. Could this be the reincarnation we have
always expected?
Seriously, Katie, what are your architectural aspirations,
it's a big field, do have a predilection for some project,
you know one that really is where you'd like to apply to?

Gawd, I hope she doesn't want people to help her select a Grad School
so she can work on New Urbanist communities that consist of
self-sustaining, super-buildings that burn down shortly after they
collapse.
Katy seems young, smart, energetic and willing to learn new things. So
obviously she won't fit in here.

10. What's a good gift for a teenager who wants to be an architect?
11. Please go to my website.
12. Why are architects so incompetent?
13. May I advertise in alt.architecture?
Frequently Offered Answers on alt.architecture:
1. What architecture school should I go to? [Common Variant: How good is
the university of 'X'?]
It's up to you. [Variant: "LOL!!!!"]
2. Can someone help me with my homework?
Nah. See question/answer #9 and stop asking others to do your work.
3. I'm working on a project for school. It's about 'X'. Will yo
please send me information about 'X'?
No. See #2. If it's a paper, then the research is already published.
If it's a studio project, then anything we send you is cheating on your
part.
4. Where can I find free plans/design work/engineering calcs on the
internet?
http://www.alltheplansintheworld.co...itect/egan.html
http://www.freearchitecture.com/
http://www.allthefreecadsoftware.com/instantplans/
5. What CAD program is best/should I buy?
Try the alt.cad newsgroup. We're pretentious artistes at
alt.architecture. We also all hate the software we use, but won't use
anything else, either. But if yours is anything different that we use,
we'll make sure you're abused for it.
6. Is architecture a good career choice?
LOL! We can only hope so.
7. Am I being overcharged by my architect?
LOL! We can only hope so.
8. What does everyone think of this famous architect's work?
AUGH!
9. Why should I hire an architect when I can draw the plans with
[insert name of extremely cheap drafting software here] on my own
computer?
You get what you pay for [or don't pay for--RE: Congressman James
Trafficant's self-defense].
10. Where can I find 'X'?
Leave us alone. Try http://www.google.com instead.
11. What's a good gift for a teenager who wants to be an architect?
Space.
12. Please go to my website.
That's not a question.
13. Why are architects so incompetent?
Only in Hong Kong. They're all good everywhere else.
Usually, it's the clients that are incompetent.
14. May I advertise in alt.architecture?
Only if your name is not Ralph, Anthony or "orangetree". Otherwise, feel
free.

Welcome Katie,
I now pass the Mantle of the Newb, in the traditional way, to the shoulders
of KTkalifornia, as the scared chanting of the group resonates through the
hall of alt.architecture with it's notorious reverb time of 6.5 seconds
rendering all threads unintelligible, or at least OT, after just a few
posts....
For myself then, this is also a transition, and I humbly accept my elevation
to Journeyman Poster, don it's ceremonial apron, and promise to guard and
keep secret the link the Holiest Portal ( http://tinyurl.com/yad3yo - Katie,
don't tell anyone, I'll get in real trouble.)

There's gotta be a comeback in here somewhere about "the portliest
hole".
But it sounds way too rude to be advisable, so I won't mention it.

I grew up in the Nipomo area, working in Santa Maria. I chose not to go
to CP for several reasons, but mainly because everyone in my family
goes to school there, works there, or farms next door to it. But yes,
it's an excellent program they have there.

I'm not 100% sure what I want to be going into yet. Growing up in a
rural area and the moving to a very urban environment, I've become
interested trying to figure out how to design for less urban areas, how
to make them more sustainable (though I hate to throw that word around)
and functional, and how to take the principles that are preached and
make them applicable in different environments..cause we have a lot of
ugly stuff that functions poorly here. Most of the planning courses I
take focus solely on urban development, unfortunately. But I suppose
that's my ambiguous, Berkeley-naive visions talking.
I've been working for a firm that deals mostly with K-12 public schools
and community colleges, which was really interesting to me, as I was
helping out on stuff while I was still attending the schools we were
doing jobs at. But really, I think that it's much more intriguing that
designing tract or custom single-family residences....the first is
boring, the second seems like it could turn into a nightmare if you
have overly-controlling clients. I'm very new to all of this though, so
who knows what I'll end up really liking.

I've done a bunch of both, and you're basically right. Custom housing is
like becoming a Nanny-very intimate. Maybe that's why I always advocate for
nicer rooms for the Nanny than anybody else. You wouldn't believe where
people have suggested I put them...
>I'm very new to all of this though, so
>who knows what I'll end up really liking.
....or 'Que Sera'. In the absence of a clear over-riding objective you
should seek the broadest exposure in terms of buildings, phases and
practices while an intern. You'll learn where, how, and on what you like to
work. It shouldn't take you more than a decade ; )

Katie, if you want to become a great architect you'll need to come up with a
gimmick. Frank Gehry thought up the idea of a pile of wet cardboard spray
painted silver. Before him was Mies' glass box, LeCobusier's concrete
bunkers and Wright's toilet-shaped museum.
But if you are Asian, forget about it (no imaginations).
Here's an idea. LA has no world-famous buildings (they think they do but
don't). How about a giant burrito?
GP
PS. Did you know that the Trans America Pyramid was only built via
subterfuge? All the local activists were against it but the builder hid his
equipment in a shed adjacent to the site and bust forth one morning. Once
construction had started, it could not be legally stopped.

Gotcha, I/we are amateur hobby architects, with
enough knowledge to be dangerous, design and
build cabin type buildings and additions, simple.
I lurk when the pro's get serious about things.
Somehow everything is on-topic in this group,
except maybe architecture.

If I read the article correctly a Tera-byte is
1,000,000,000,000 bytes
but you have 5x300 1,000,000 bytes =
1,500,000,000 bytes
So compare these, (lining up all them zero's)
1,000,000,000,000
1,500,000,000
If I read correctly that's ~1000x more than you have.
It's almost like the hard-drive manufacturers are
gonna have to churn out huge chunks of porn to
create demand!
Really, it's awesome.

| True, only if you are using decimals and the IEC standard. Technically,
using
binary, it would be 1,099,511,627,776 KiB. Don's HDs would have a count of
1,536,000,000 KiB.
Hope that clears things up.

"KiB's" why didn't you say so in the 1st place ;-).
They should really throw in a 15 digit calculator
with every hard-drive so we can figure out what
the heck we're buying.

Hmmm, check this out...
http://www.indiafm.com/features/2007/01/01/2017/
That's a problem, I haven't been raped this week
by a woman of the opposite sex. I was blaming
myself cuz I don't shave, bathe, and I smell bad,
but it's not that, it's cuz they have porn, sheesh I
feel marginalized, that's without the margarin.
