| I want to buy a tiny house or cottage or trailer on a piece of land for
$ 10.000 or 1-2 acres for $ 2000 in or outside a little town. I need no
basement, no garage but electicity and water and Internet access. I can
move to any state or town in the western USA.
I called a few real estate guys but it seems they just want to sell me
their most expensive stuff. I looked at some websites but found mainly
expensive houses in larger towns.
How do I find it?

Ask your rich uncle to sell it to you?
Or maybe a good tent in the sticks?
Its doubtfull you'll even find a piece of land, alone, for a grand or 2.
Why is that all you're willing to spend?
FWIW: My garage, which is almost finished right now, cost $25k and that
didn't include the land.
Buildings are 'spensive dood.

Find the cheapest house you can find anywhere and get it financed. Your
payments won't be too bad, and you can write off the interest. I would
assume you have a job, since you can pay for bills and such.

The 1 or 2 acres part is the killer, unless he can pull a deal on someone
elses land.
(but I'd never recommend that....you can be booted at any time when you're
beholding)
Land is pretty reasonable around here, compared to FL, but it still goes for
about $10k per acre and up.
More desolate areas of the US may be less $$$.
The infrastructure is on the moon too, well, septic, etc.
Supposing he has the land, and he's handy with tools, he can build a 12'x12'
cabin and design it so a window could be converted to a door and the whole
thing expanded at a later time.
If he can't do it all in one fell swoop then he should try to figure out how
to do it in bite sized chunks.

I agree. The OP might be able to find something in the scrub lands of
eastern Montana or maybe North Dakota for $2K per acre, but who would want
to live there?

The bigger question is, 'How is he gonna live there?'.
If its desolate how is he gonna gather coins?
Now my wife can live anywhere in the world and make good money.
But not everybody is that lucky.
Anyway, his budget of $1k to $2k is not even fathomable.
It costs $2k just to rent a place, what with 1st, last and deposit.
Its like saying you want to buy a car but you only want to spend 25 cents.
LOL

I'm assuming he's going to telecommute since one of his prerequisites is
internet access. Good luck with finding that access out in the boonies. I
say forget the acreage, use the 10,000 as a down payment, get a tiny place
in the most inexpensive city you can find and finance it.
I love how we always get into discussions like this and most of the time the
OP is nowhere to be found.

$10k???
I thought he said $1k or $2k?
I'm in the boonz and the best net access I can get is with a satellite
(Hughes) at about $75/mth.
Its a lot better than dial up but its no DSL or cable.
We were told there will NEVER be broadband here.
I've seen the OP's post in a couple other groups, misc.rural, etc.

Here's a reply from another newsgroup that I thought was pretty good:
Try Mentone, Texas. County seat of Loving county, population 52. The
county not the town. They are down from 120 in 1990. Move there and
you'd make the newspaper. If they had one.
On election day, an old cowboy is outside the polling place crying his
eyes out. Someone asked him what was wrong. He answered, "My dear of
departed Pa came to town to vote and didn't even look me up."

Heh, that's what happens to sniped posts. He originally said $10,000 for a
tiny house, cottage, or trailer on a piece of land or 1 or 2 acres for
$2000.
As for NEVER having broadband, I would put money on eventually getting WiMax
out there, when it comes out fully, and if they don't, it would be a good
business venture for someone out there. Fast as Cable/DSL only wireless and
capable of going 30 Miles (though I can't remember if it has to be line of
site or not). It would make a great last mile option. Sprint/Nextel is
said to be working on a Wimax Network.

Culture shock.
You're way over estimating what this place is like.
Its rural, always has been and prolly always will be.
Took me awhile to digest how all of this is.
I'm still adjusting.
Read about it in magazine articles but now I'm all up in it.
The thing is NOBODY around here even wants broadband, and hardly anybody
even has a computer.
When people come in our house they act like they walked onto the starship
Enterprise.
No shit man, these folks are hicks! LOL
But everybody is real nice.
Haven't met a single XXXXXXX yet.
Life is slower here.
And closer too.
There's only 15,000 people in the whole county and everybody knows everybody
else.
Its amazing.
I came from a city that had 160,000 people (600,000 in the county) and
nobody knew anybody.
Everything is different.
I tell my wife, its like being in a foreign country though everybody speaks
english......

I am not handy with tools but a smart and tough cookie. This often
helps.
