| Okay, here's the latest in the floor saga. You-all gave me the name
of a company that does expansion joints. Thank you. I printed out
the pages from their website (Schuler or something like that) and gave
it to my friend. He explained it to the tiler and gave him the
pages. The tiler took the pages to a supply company, explained the
circumstances, and came back with an edge piece -- not a compression
joint. I wonder if it's being passive aggressive or just being a tile
guy.
So now the tile guy and the carpenter have put their heads together
and come up with this idea.
The carpenter thinks that the expansion joint isn't needed because the
hardwood flooring is laminated onto plywood and the plywood won't
expand any more than the OSB that's under it. Further, he's nailing
it down and trying to hit the studs so he doesn't pierce the radiant
heating tubes.
So the plan, for now, is to just put the hardwood up against the tile
and call it good, but leave an expansion space on the other 3 sides.
If it matters, there's an island in the kitchen and the tile sort of
goes around it (like half of a stop-sign) so the wood will be meeting
the tile at an angle for part of the run.
Any thoughts?
Pat.

Go to Home Depot and buy a damn piece of Schluter. It's the cleanest
way to make the joint. Sheesh...what's the deal? It's a simple piece
of aluminum designed for this type of application.
(and if they don't think the wood will move, well, it'll be interesting)

I called HD and they said they didn't carry it. Yikes. I'll call
back. Maybe I'll get someone different.

Checked everyplace local. No one has it. They have edge pieces and
such but not joints. Has to be special ordered. My friend will have
to decide today whether to drive to Buffalo and find a piece or to do
without.
If they had just got the right thing last week ..............

They make so many different shapes it's no wonder you can't find every one
locally.

It's not that I can't find "every one"; it's that I can't find "any
one". They only carry molding and edging but no joints of any kind.

I just spec'em. I don't buy them. I'm surprised a big box store carries any
of them.

The piece you need is the tile edge. It's not much more than a "J"
shape, a little thin lip at the top edge, then a flatter bottom edge
that gets grouted in. I've seen some of them with a "truss" pattern in
cut in it to better grip the grout.
Our HD does carry it.
However, when I was helping my parents who live out west do some
remodeling, we discovered that common products in our HD were not common
in theirs (nor were they even available) and vice versa. HD seems to
buy more regionally than you might expect.

Our local tiles stores carry them. Not all of the pieces but most common
pieces. Several years ago I contacted the company and they sent me a
complete catalog with samples. How about ordering it online?

I special ordered it from the main tile wholesaler in the Buffalo
area. Got it yesterday and it should go down today or tomorrow.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well the expansion joint went down on Sunday and the tile is set. Got
a pretty good match on color. I've seen better mitres before, but
what the heck. Thanks to you all.
My bet is that both the hardwood guy (the builder) and the tile guy
fight over the excess expansion joint material to show to future
customers. 5 years from now it will be their showcase and it will be
wonderful how they thought of the idea.
The latest news is the refrigerator. The guy who did the design
spec'd a weird size (and on the small size) for the fridge. Now my
friend has to find a fridge or try to get some of the wood shaved from
a couple of places so he can pick up a little space for the fridge.
He might be able to shrink the dishwasher size down, but that would
require a bit more tile work since the tile is already down.
I just glad I'm officially out of everything. His next step is to
pick the paint colors. It will be interesting to see what color he
comes up with. The layout is open. He has gray slate in the kitchen,
cherry floors in the rest of the house, knotty pine ceiling, oak doors
and trim, and hickory cabinettes. He's thinking "something like
brown, only lighter".
Now if I can just get him to order his phone switchover and cable
installation ....

When I was still someone who looked for jobs, there was a building here in
town that prospective employers told me apparently had dozens of architects
taking credit for it.
Last week I had lunch with a colleague/friend who said that a former
employee had *digitally edited* a letter of reference for him by one of our
friends...and when the prospective employer called to confirm it became
apparent to her he'd doctored it. Boy, was she pissed...and she's scary when
she's mad.

This was back before mom took over his life and started wiping his XXX all
anew.
Now he looks forward to his weekly asswipings and his brain has atrophied
accordingly and is completely fixated on nukes.
Scared little sissy, clinging to mama.
