| I am redesigning my living room and have just installed a black leather
half circle sofa from American leather. I have 2 side chairs that are
muted red Brazilian recliners - very sleek. Here's my dilemma - what to
do for side tables, lamps and accessories? I have cream carpet on the
floor but I am thinking of bringing in an area rug with strong design.
I have some Michael Flohr paintings in the room and a tv I am trying to
diminish positionally. Any ideas welcome...

Since you've got the sleek look going for you, go with it. I'd like a
rug with strong but modern geographic design in it. You could carry
the colors through with a throw pillow or two on the sofa. For side
tables, go with a retro/modern clean line to mimic the sleek lines of
the furniture. I recommend carrying through the shapes, if not the
colors of the pieces you have.

ps. I own a furniture store (not that you'll be shopping there, but I
know a bit about design). For details see http://olyfurnitureworks.com.

| Hi, seeing your looking for input I'll venture my opinion on the side
tables. Cherry end tables custom made with mat black interiors, no backing
/see through, plain with rounded corners and 1" profile.

| His paintings are very moody with strong colors. You could go with angular
solid wood pieces or metal and glass, depending on if you need to make the
space seem more intimate or create the illusion of more space. It may be
most interesting to combine both in an eclectic mix. It would be nice to
inject colors found in the paintings into the room, beyond the black and red
you have now, for more interest. Perhaps in blown glass accessories, the
area rug you mention, accent pillows or in the paint color used for the
room. If the TV is large and must go into a cabinet, you might want to have
a very sleek cabinet lifted up on exposed legs to reduce the massiveness of
the cabinet. Or, find an open TV cabinet or replace the TV with a flat
screen model mounted on the wall.
