Author little bugs on my mint.

Hello everyone,

My name is Anita and I live in South Austin. I have been enjoying a
renewed opportunity to garden this year since my move from Dallas. Also
along the way the opportunity to read your board has been enlightning
and very enjoyable.
I have some questions from you though if you please?

I brought my herbs in the hope of their continued success this winter,
but have had a run in with a couple of bugs.
The first set of bugs appeared on my basil. They were white with little
cocoon like wrappings .They seemed to sit mostly underneath the leaves
but some were atop the leaves.
I initially sprayed w a dilute soap/water spray ,but that only proved
to damage the leaves some. So I took the plant outside to die
naturally.
Then my mint began to have bugs too. These were little black bugs (much
smaller then the white ones). They do not seem to have gotten on my
garlic chives. They are on my lavender though. I cut back the mint
plant all the way.
This morning in looking at the pot and plants they seem to be small
little spiders (hard to tell) and are all over the pot enjoying the
dirt and plants.
I have a couple of questions concerning these bugs.
1. how to get rid of them?
2. will they get on my poinsetta, I brought in? (it sits next to the
herbs)
3. Will it get on my african violets?

Thank you everyone,
Anita

It sounds like you have mealybugs on your basil and alphids on your mint and
perhaps spidermites. You can use neem oil spray to treat all of these pest,
or various insectides available at most stores. These bugs will attack
just about all plants I have had experience growing.

good luck
