It looks like I may have some December tomatoes, from plants I managed
to keep alive all summer in pots. The grape tomato started blossoming a
couple of days ago and I still have a couple of bees around so hopefully
the blossoms were pollinated.

I know temps are supposed to drop in the next few days so tomorrow I'll
put together a poor woman's hot-house: two layers of heavy plastic
painters' tarp over a 2x4 frame large enough to house the tomato plants,
the fig and the grapefruit. I'll squeeze in the cacti, too...

You know, you can pollinate those yourself. :-)
They are supposed to be self-pollinating so just gently "pinch" the
blossoms between your fingers. Mom taught me that! And it works.

I've seen no bees this time of year. I have one green fruit on the two
potted plants and an increasing number of blooms.

I check and press mature blooms daily.

At the first frost warning, the pot will be moved into the greenhouse
and a fresh lamp put up!

Good luck! :-)

One of those clip on lamps and a 40 watt bulb will keep stuff above
freezing temps.

50' extension cords are cheap at Lowe's.

best of luck. I had some tomatos in my poly tunnel grow until the end of
July here (your end of January). Not the greatest plants but freshly picked
tomatos from your back garden in the middle of winter was quite good eh.

The "hothouse" ended up being much more complicated than I intended.
That's because my engineer husband got involved. I have an 8x8x4 box
with one end on a hinge for access. My plan was to just build a 4x4x4
cube and have the man help me lift it and then lower it over the plants
in question, with a plan to prop up one corner for ventilation and/or
watering access.

Hah. Let an engineer get involved...

My neighbor across the fence was eyeballing it today, I'm sure she's
planning to ask me if I have room for some of her patio plants...

I just wrapped my volunteer tomato plant in plastic. I have a greenhouse,
but it's still in the shade, so there's no point in moving it yet. There's a
baby tomato and quite a few blossoms, although I can't see how this is going
to work out this late.
