| Do you think the grubs will be out early this year due to all the warm
weather?
How do you treat for grubs?
Where can one get the best products to treat for grubs - I hate them as they
destroy my lawn and plants.
Also, snails and slugs chew my poor flowers!

Best treatment for grubs is beneficial nematodes. If you want to treat for
grubs wait until about 4 weeks after you see the Jun bugs and then put the
nematodes down. The grubs you find now have done all the damage they will
do. It is the new hatch in the spring that eats the roots. You can use a
bug bait for the slugs and snails. Green Light makes a good one which will
also take care of the pill bugs.
Good Luck.

Pill bugs are harmless for the most part... Just don't let any veggies
touch the ground.
For slugs and snails, Dark Ale.
Worked far better for us than cheap beer. They seemed to prefer the
Irish Ale.
I'm not kidding. ;-)

The more yeast the more you attract them. That's what they go for.

The discovery was actually accidental...
I don't drink beer, dad does. We were out of the cheap stuff for snail
bait in the dishes, so he put out what he had in the 'frige.
I swear it attracted at least 3 times as many slugs as the Dos Equis did!
Dad commented that slugs just had good taste. <G>

Armadillos, of course. I've seen 4 in the yard in daytime this
weekend. Which is usually my daytime-armadillo quota for the

Wow,......... we only get possums for core aeration and I have yet to see

Does the beer just attract them, or does it also get rid of them?
I wonder if they like hops? As an IPA drinker, I could put down some Dog
Fish Head 90 min IPA!

My poor guy who lived in our yard for almost seven years, way beyond
life expectancy has died. He came up near the house to die. Every
night at about ten the neighbors dog would "woof" and I knew the
opossum was out there, and he was. That's when they emerge, about
ten.

They crawl into it and drown.
It's really been _very_ effective for us, more so for slugs than snails.
My slug infestation is finally down to a minimum.

Worth a shot. :-)
Shallow plant bottoms holding about 1/2" to 3/4" deep have worked. I
think they get drunk. I've watched them. At first they just crawl to the
edge of the beer and drink, then they crawl into it and die.
Cheers!

I'd bet those are armadillos, not possums. Possums aren't
diggers.

| They are attracted to the yeast used in making beer, not the beer
itself. There are other methods I've used which does not require
killing them. Open a package of dry yeast, or a cube if you know what
that is, and paint it onto a smooth piece of wood and place it where
the slugs are the most concentrated. In the morning you can lift the
board and put the slugs elsewhere. If you can identify the eggs and
put them elsewhere in a dark, moist place on soil, that will reduce
your population.

That would be cool, but I live on Town Lake and have a chain link fence
yard, so I don't think it's armadillos (never seen on around here). The
holes are about the shape of a possum snout. It's probably raccoons being
verrry quiet (I have a dog), although I'd think the holes would be larger.

I remember you talking about your opossum....... Until I got a dog, I
always had at least one come in the cat door at night for years (two
different houses). The cats ignored him/her, "I don't see that giant
mouse...". They have very soft fur, btw, and don't seem to mind being petted
after awhile......

I'll post some pictures of armadillo holes ;-) The armadillos
have a much better chance of getting under a chain link fence than
do most possums. Armadillos usually work under cover of darkness,
too.

Really, I never had the impression they were very smart. But, I see the
National Opossum Society says so, as well. And, to survive for 70 million
years from the age of dinosaurs, I'd say they're pretty smart (and cute...).

It's a possibility, but I would think I would have seen one. I don't
remember them being that stealthy while camping out in the hill country as
kids. The possums climb through the trellises and over the fence.
Now, I'm intrigued to find out who was doing the digging...

I have two big labs and when we came upon a very large armadillo out in the
woods, the labs chased him, but when he stopped and faced them, the dogs
just stopped and stared back looking frustrated. However, another not so
funny incident, one of my dogs came running up to me one day with a still
alive Possum in her mouth wagging the tail and feeling all proud of the
present she brought me. Luckily got her to drop it and it scurried off.

I have a Lab, too. Mine would probably try to make friends if they came
nose to nose. Although, a couple of years ago, there was a young possum that
crawled an arbor on the fence and she'd go out to bark at him every night.
The possum would freeze and I'd have to go drag her in and try to explain to
the possum that he didn't have to climb the fence to get where he was going.
This went on for many weeks until she stopped barking at him and he'd just
pause and look at her before continuing.

If it's a hole which looks like a comet shape, meaning a hole and all
the dirt to the side all in one direction, it's an armadillo. If you
don't think that's what you got, it could also be a skunk. The last
several nights we've been sleeping with the windows open and a skunk
sprayed somewhere in the area and the stink woke me up! Either way,
it's fun for me to have animals visit. We live on Brushy Creek so we
get all sorts of things. I'm awaiting the fox who comes every year to
have her pups under the shed.

That describes the hole, so it must be one stealthy armadillo or skunk.
I've never smelled a skunk here or seen any road kill of either. I suppose
I'll be up nights if they return...

My wife's hairstylist here in Austin has a pet (it's about 9 months old now)
baby opossum. She (the stylist) found it floating belly up in their
backyard koi pond last May -- she said it was so small that it fit in the
palm of her hand. She revived it and long story short, it's now a family
pet...along with three cats and two (big) dogs. The 'possum plays with both
the cats and dogs, sleeps in the bed and loves people. And yes, she got the
proper care instructions from local wildlife people, all the OK's from the
authorities, etc.

We have no shortage of skunk here in Texas. P.U. However, they are
very cute critters. Armadillo's have extremely strong, hard, sharp
nails to dig with. They are very strong little things. I usually see
the ones who come to my garden in the very early morning when the Fox
is returning with food for her young-ins.

Oh I love hearing stories like that. Does their opossum go to the
bathroom in a litter box, or outdoors? I love rats, but they poo and
pee everywhere. They don't "GO" somewhere to void, so that's why I
don't get a few. I've rescued rats from the pool, as well as this one
bull frog who comes every year. It has to be the same guy. He jumps
in the pool, does some laps, makes a huge poop and my husband scoops
him out and brings him back to the creek. So funny.

Um, yes, but Steve's point was addressing the curiously incorrect
pronunciations that native Texans employ, which identifies who are native
and who are not. Kinda like Houston St. in Manhattan...

Um, who cared if someone is native or not? This is the United States
and I was born here, so I am American. I live 37 years in NYC and
eastern Long Island.
Houston St. is pronounced both ways in NYC. Howston or Hueston. No
problems and nobody gives a shit if people are native or not. I guess
that's the advantage of growing up in a progressive, diverse culture
in one of America's first cities. To be honest, I like it much more
here, but that doesn't mean I'm going to dumb down to fit in.

I lived in NYC for 10 years, on Mercer two blocks above Houston, I never
heard it pronounced "Hueston" by anyone other than tourists.

She was a critter-lover and had sorts of pets. I remember her

What about :
Seinfeld
Everybody Loves Raymond
King of Queens
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Two and a Half Men
I could list more, but my mind is fried today. I'm also biased now
that I look at my list because most of these shows were about New York
and many of their references were funny to me, but my husband who is

I knew that about you (more or less). I made a joke (which I think
you get).
But now you got my hackles up. Texans tend to use different words and
pronunciations than New Yawkers. That does not make us dumb.
However, please do not construe that as an endorsement of the word

Yeah, Buddy Ebsen was the key when he fought the producers and made Jed
into a wise sage rather than just a yokel.
Oh, did Ellie May's coffee pour out like thick batter, but Jed drank it
anyway?

If you heard me speak, you'd know I was from New York, but I don't say
YAWKA. My accent is very subtle and most people think I'm from
Boston. When I watch the Soprano's I shrink in embarrassment that the
way they are portrayed is how the world thinks the Northeast speaks.
Calling something a possum is not a pronunciation difference, it's
incorrect. Saying Guadaloop instead of Guadaloop-hey is a Texasism,
but it's not the correct way to pronounce it. It's so unimportant in
the grand scheme of the world, don't get hackles up. I'm a snob and I
know it! LOL

LOL! Not two minutes ago I said I was a snob in an earlier post! No
question, I am definitely a snob and I will never deny that.

Actually, the correct way to pronounce it is "Hwadaloopay".
Speaking of accents, I am from a small town to the south of here, and
have no discernable Texas accent, although I can fall into a few reasonable
facsimiles should the need arise to fit in with regional locals.
I didn't use "y'all" until arriving at UT as an acting major to
assimilate with my more urban contemporaries....

Can't stand either their constantly shining voices. I'd rather
watch British comedy.

Never saw that or the Queens thing. Probably watched them once
and never again.

U.S. Opossums are related to the true Australian possums, and
there's at least one true possum breed here in the US. They're
practically synonymous, and possum has become common usage here in
the US - but maybe not by zoologists (or snobs :-)

See? That's ever so much more useful and easier on the tongue. Congrats!

Actually "victuals", but you're properly capturing the phonetics.
And "possum" is a regional variation of "opossum" across the entire
southern U.S., like "aluminium", "noo-kyu-lar" (rare in my experience, but
not unique), and so on.
As compared to "taters", "t'maters", and such, which are clearly
colloquial contractions.
Tell you what, I won't say anything about "Africker" and "Asier" if no one
picks on my "taters".
