This spider has been building webs across my back kitchen door
for the last 6 weeks or so. Smart spider: The light from the
kitchen attracts bugs at night - so many that he has to rebuild
his web every 36 hours or so.

Anybody recognize it? It's not a great photo as it was taken at
night through the glass door, but the markings are pretty evident
He/she is currently sucking on dinner - as it is every night
around this time. It's almost 2" long in this photo; easily
three inches when he's lurking in the center of the web spread
out.

Interesting to watch, but he has inconveniently declared my back
porch off limits for quite a while since I can't get in/out the
door.

I don't know what they are, but I have them all over my yard including
the front porch near the light.

Kind of you not to disturb her web. :-)

Odds are, she will eventually lay an egg sack, then die.

I don't know what kind it is but I had one by a light on my garage a couple
of years ago. It stayed in the same place for a couple of months (good food
source being near the light) and when cold weather came, it spun itself into
what looked almost like a cocoon. It stayed there all winter and in the
spring, spider and "cocoon" were gone.

That was probably an egg sack.

No, I watched it wrap itself up from within...possibly the ultimate
sacrifice, lay eggs, wrap yourself inside for spiderlings to eat when they
hatch?

Weird...
The only spiders I've ever seen make a cocoon type nest are jumping
spiders.
