There is a "loose tradition" of snipping in newsgroups -- that we
snip spam and offensive messages rather than perpetuate them by
quoting them in full. The custom was more relevant when baud rates
were very low and bandwidth was husbanded carefully.
There is also the possibility that by quoting the full message, you
are passing it along to those who would have missed the original post
but picked up your reply. Just as you can perpetuate a slander or
libel by repeating it, you can perpetuate the victimization of these
people.
All that said, I don't think you deserved the reply you got.
