Kitchen Island Cost

| We are planning to buy or have built a kitchen island. the dimensions
are 60" by 36" both ends and the back will be beaded wood and the front
will have two 12 inch cabinets with drawers on either end and two
cabinet doors opening up under the cook top which will be in the front
center of the island. ballpark, what should we expect to spend to have
it built. we have a quote of about $2200 for readymade cabinets to make
the island. is that high or low? any help much appreciated.

It's impossible to say. If you don't like the number get another quote
from someone who can actually build the island for you.

depends on the wood/main cabinet materials you use. the hardware you
use. that materials for counter top you use...
that sounds pretty high for ready made/non custom.
draw up some detailed dimensions and I could get you a custom cab price.

| materials vary widely on this as well as for your desired result. get
more estimates until you are satisfied. you may need to check with your
neighbors for their favorite carpenter/plumber for this project. always
provide sufficient hours of work and cash for their visits. sometimes
the best recommendation is that he was hired twice or more and is still
on their list.

Sounds danged high for out of the box cabinetry. For that kind of cash it
should be custom made by a kitchen specialist with all the appropriate
amenities considered if not included.

Sounds like two 12 inch drawer banks with a 36 inch cabinet
underneath. Six drawer fronts, two doors.
Oak? Maple? Cherry?
Countertop?
I've just quoted on a five foot plain jane island in oak without
countertop. One set pot and pan drawers, two 12 inch drawer banks.
Pllywood boxes, dovetailed joints. Three grand.
Your mileage may vary. Considerably.

Sorry if i wasn't clear. it would be three cabinets put together. each
end would be 12" wide with a drawer on top and a cabinet door below with
a 36" cabinet in the middle with two doors. a 36" thermador cook top
goes on the middle cabinet with a downdraft vent that rises out of the
cabinet and behind the cook top. we plan to have a granite countertop.
first quote of $2,200 and change plus 6% tax is just for the cabinets
that will make the island base, made candlelight. sunday we a quote for
the best thomasville cabinets, same size, was $1,600 and change plus tax
from home depot. we will have our own contractor do the install. so
we're doing better, aren't we? comments please. TIA

If you have a contractor, talk to him/her to make sure you're
comparing apples and apples. He/she can walk you through the
differences in manufacture. Some of the ways companies like
Thomasville cut the cost for HD are 1) no backs 2) flimsy drawer
construction and joints 3) low quality drawer slides and hinges.
Remember too that HD stuff comes flat packed ... you'll have to
transport and assemble it. Or pay for it to be done.
Our experience is that we can build and install better cabinets for
the same true cost. But, as I said, your mileage may vary
considerably.

Yes.
You can buy a ready made cabinet for $75 or you can buy one for $500. You
can fit it with a $100 counter top of a $1000 counter top.
Not to mention the complexity or simplicity of the wiring for the cook top.

Man, I have to second all this.
Did a complete kitchen remodel a year ago. New cabinets all around. HD
quote was outrageous and we knew the quality was middling at best. To
top it off they couldn't guarantee delivery inside 4 months. On a lark
we called the local cabinet shop, who built cabinets with solid hickory
fronts and faceframes for about 3 grand less than HD. High quality
slides, hinges, and dovetails throughout. Cabinets were ready in two
weeks (before we were!).
I was going to build the island myself (I have all the tools and have
done some of this in the past) but couldn't fit it into my schedule, so
I called the cabinet shop back. I thought their quote for the island
was a bit high but I paid it anyway and couldn't be happier with the
results.
Six month later, I called them again to cabinet the hobby room.
We have, in other parts of the house (laundry, utility, etc.), HD
cabinets. Yucky particle board monstrosities that were difficult to
assemble and in some cases are falling apart already. Guess who I'm
going to call when we can't stand them any more?
