Please help/advise me fix washing machine.

A few months ago I got my washing machine fixed. The problem was that
the drum wasn't spinning round although the machine was going through
full cycle (filling up with water, and emptying out with water at
appropriate times).

The repair man took out and replaced two small black blocks each about
one inch long and 1/2 " wide approx. I don't know what these are or
what they are called. He too them out form a large component in the
machine that is cylinder shaped approx 5" diameter and 6" long.

I'm sure these are quite easy to replace as it only took him about a
minute.

Can someone tell me what these two blocks are please and how I should
replace them?

The washing machine is a Hotpoint 95452

There should be a service booklet taped inside your washing machine.
Get it out and see if there is anything about the blocks.

How would you compare the old one from the new one?
Is the old one all worn out or something?

My guess is that you don't have to know what it is. Just take the old one
to the service and ask for the same one... whatever it is... ;)

Sometime ago our Whirlpool washing machine had similar symptoms.
The problem was that the coupling between the machine's motor and
the "transmission" was broken. The coupling consisted of three pieces,
about the size you describe. Take a look at the following site and

If that is your problem, it is reasonably easy to fix it; the main
difficulty is getting to the pieces. Good luck.

Hey guys sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I'd just like to
say thanks a lot for replying. It wasn't the coupling NS but thanks
for the pics as it got me looking in the right direction. I managed to
locate the blocks and took them to the washing machine shop and the guy
said they were Brushes and only cost =A37 ($12) so I liked that!

They are very simple to replace (just like replacing a fuse) although
because the insides are made of graphite/carbon (similar to pencil
lead) delicacy is the watch word.

The blocks are not the problem. If they were replaced just a few months ago
and are already broken, find the cause and fix that also. Until you find
out why the blocks break, you will have to do this on a regular basis,
probably with shorter intervals. Treat the cause, not the symptom.

If the brushes are in fact kaput again, then it's time for a new motor,
as something is very wrong here. These should last the life of the
washer.
