Home Air Filter change frequency

| When a home air filter manufacturer recommends a filter change every
90 days, what duty cycle do they assume the filter wil be used?
1 hour per day?
10 hours per day?
24 hours per day?
I think they should list filter change recommendations in hours (e.g.
filter good for 300 hours of use).
(Some thermostats like my LUX have filter-life counters that show the
number of hours the filter was used since it was last changed).

Yes, looking at the filter periodically is a good idea. I've seen cheap
filters that failed and periodic inspection would catch that and limit
the damage.
Beyond that, there are a few air filter monitors available that monitor
airflow or pressure and indicate when a filter should be changed similar
to the indicators on most truck air filters these days.

What makes the run hours any different then days, it's still going to depend
on the environment.
(clean/dirty home, pets, return location, etc)

You need to change it every 90 days, unless it needs to be changed sooner,
or operating conditions result in you being able to change it less
frequently.

You should be able to call LUX and ask them how many hours you can go
between filter changes. After all, they put the hour meter in there, so they
should be able to tell you how to use it. But then, they don't make filters,
so their guess is as good as..... If they give any answer, and don't just
hang up on you. At least one of the manuals they have online gives their
theory as to how many hours = 90 days, and it's not any of the guesses that
you've made. So, my first answer is likely to be the most correct answer.
If you don't like these answers, you'll need a new thermostat.

I think everybody should install a Dwyer Magnehelic.
Then, they will not only know when it's time to change the filter, but
they'll know if they have a shitty duct system.

That's FAR too long in an HVAC unit. No way should you wait
until it's having a measurable effect on static pressue drop.
If it looks dirty - change it.
If it's been in there for six months, but looks like you put
it in last week - leave it the hell alone.
Every unit, every house, etc, will be different. Times of
year may be different, for a given installation. The key is simple,
as I said - LOOK at the damned thing once in a while. It ain't rocket
sicence.

How would the manufacturer of the filter know if you have a dirty house
or a sanitary house, or whether you lived in the dry dusty deserts of
Nevada or in a tropical region, like Florida.

an electrostatic filter. According to Filtrete the electronstatic fibers
loose their ability to atttrack the smallest particles before the filter is
otherwise dirty.

Check, yes, that's fine. But change whether it needs it or
not ? Waste of money.
IMO, any filter change based on arbitrary time schedules is a
waste. I've done more than my share of them ( where it wasn'y my call
as to change or not ), and I've seen plenty that needed changing
months earlier than scheduled, and plenty that the 'old' ones I took
out were indistinguishable from the new ones I put in.
'How many days has it been since the last change' is
irrelevant. The condition of the filter, which is a result of useage,
environment, etc, should be what dictates whether the CHECK results in
a CHANGE or not. There's just no sense in changing filters that look
like you took them out of the box last week, any more than leaving
cruddy ones in place because some schedule says they're good for
another month or three.

A MERV 11 filter is going to pick up a lot more dirt, dust, animal dander,
and even some mold spores, as opposed to the K-mart 3 for a dollar
fiberglass specials that *might* stop larger critters and rocks.
Even in homes that look immaculately clean, there is a lot of stuff that
gets picked up in the pleats. If you want to use the fiberglass ones, and
wait till they are stopped up, thats fine, you can do that. You can breathe
all the stuff that passes through. Personally, I change mine every month.
BTW, I have a lot of customers who have had all kinds of
respiratory/asthmatic problems for years until they started using pleated
filters and changing them every month. Once they changed to pleats, their
symptoms went away. Thats good enough for me.

Oh, I'm completely in agreement on the type of filter. I use
a fiberglass in front of a 2 " pleat, the fiberglass serving to keep
the larger critters out of the pleats.
Both should be CHECKED monthly, and changed AS NEEDED.

Well, don't that depend on where you live?
I have friends North of San Diego who don't even have an AC system. A
million dollar house, and it sits on a small mountain near Bonsall, and it's
always nice temps there.
I live in the desert in Las Vegas. Only the homeless don't have AC units.
And even here, there's months when we hardly run the heat pump. Some times
we use the swam coolers.
So, do I need to change the AC filter once a month when I don't even kick it
on? I don't think so, Tim.
I LOOK at the filter. I know that is unacceptable for multitaskers and the
anal, but it works for me. If it needs changing, change it. But why waste
money on the decent pleated filters when you are taking out a clean one to
put a new one in?
This is a question that has only ONE logical answer.
Change it when it's dirty. If you can't remember to at least look at it
once a month, you need to slow your life down.
Multitasking - Being able to do more than one thing at a time, but not being
able to do at least one of them worth a flying fuck.

These ratings are (I'm guessing) the result of internal standards
used by the manufacturer and are mainly designed to allow comparison
between their products and for advertising (you are more likely to
purchase a filter that needs changed less often, even if more
expensive).
In practice (as the owner of t dogs, 4 cats and 2 kids) I find that
every week the filter needs a good vacuuming and every month it
needs replacing - irregardless of what the package says. Point is
you need to determine what is normal for your situation and stick
to that.
I purchase the higher quality filters that claim to reduce allergens.
They are considerably more expensive (about 12 bucks) but do seem
to reduce dust in the house. Ironically the 'better' filters
would need changing more often.
Note that there are available reusable filters that you can hose
off once a month.
