While satisfying on an emotional level, booby traps have been outlawed since
the Magna Carta in 1216.
There are any number of people who can enter your property without your
permission or even your knowledge:
A peace officer executing a valid search warrant.
A fireman or other emergency service person.
A child who has no criminal capacity.
A vagrant involved in a civil trespass.
Health inspectors, game wardens, meter readers, letter carriers, and the
like.
Neighbors, friends, family members (from out of town), or others who believe
they have permission.
Anyone acting under the umbrella of "exigent circumstances."
Moreover, even IF it's a burglar who's the subject of the booby-trap,
criminal law does not sanction physical harm or death for burglary and does
not permit an individual to be the process of invoking a sanction. The
trap-setter WILL be prosecuted.
Further, the actor who tripped the trap (or his estate) will march against
the homeowner for civil damages.

Wasn't me! Some trace the origins of the Common Law back to King John and
the signing of the Magna Carta in 1216. Some say it goes back earlier to the
Charter of Liberties. Laws agains booby-traps are found in the Bible!
Whatever, we've been on the path to ruination, according to your estimation,
for thousands of years. Every civilized country in the world has laws
against booby-traps and no ruler or groups of citizens has ever seen fit to
repeal them.

I have never understood the reason why a "do gooder" is supposed to
be a bad thing.
