Author Spammers - why us?

This NG has recently been infested by hordes of posts for "cheap 'x' "
products from Asia and some kind of airline spam in German.

It's eating up this NG! But other NGs I read regularly are not
infested.

Anybody got a theory?

Same is happening in the cooking group.

Theory: We are active groups so without bothering to look, they spam them.
Then anothr sees the increased traffic (with no clue on content) and adds
more thinking they are selling stuff.

In fact, I would go a very far FAR way out of my way and pay double or more
for any product not related to any of those spammers.

What I notice; is when spam (obvious threads) are replied too, it
increases. Threads posted to non related groups and even six groups.

Now, this group IS Anarchist - no moderator

Well, first and foremost, some IDIOT is buying things that are
advertised here. Soon after that IDIOT runs out of money, the
spam will stop. I know it's not IDIOTS. There can't be more
than one person that dumb.

But, the solution is simple, I resisted for a long time, but
it works like magic. Block all posts originating from googlegroups
and the problem is gone.

Sure I miss a FEW legitimate posts. I can live with that.

re: when spam (obvious threads) are replied too, it increases

The other day I saw an an obvious spam with 1 reply. Thinking that
perhaps someone in this group had penned a witty response, I took a
look.

What I found was that the reply was another spam for totally
unrelated product!

That's what we need - a group where spammers spend all of their time
spamming replies to other spams until the whole thing just implodes.

It mostly comes from Google Groups, and Google does *nothing* to stop it. Do
yourself a favor and kill everything from Google Groups.

This site will get you started:

I kill all Google Group posts, you can too.

If you use a real newsreader, it is a simple matter to put in a filter along
the lines "if message posted from google groups but not posted by (list of
valie posters) then filter it out"

I have a total of 5 people in my exceptions list.
