Hi All,

My house is on the side of a hill. The main road is behind my house, which
is uphill. My street comes down the left side. There is a lot of granite
ledge and a lot of ground water, which finds its way into the back of my
barn after a heavy rain. The installed french drain isn't working properly,
as the water seems to enter the barn through the gap in the concrete floor
where the french drain is. The gap had started to clog with dirt, but I
cleared it with a putty knife ... maybe I should just seal the crack.

I'm thinking I need to rent a ditchwitch or something to cut a trench
across my backyard, down to the ledge, and then put some crushed rock in the
bottom, then some sort of drainage pipe, and more crushed rock on top.

I'm not sure what I'm doing, but have talked to a few people, and have
looked online for ideas ... please help, I would love you hear your
thoughts.

Sounds like the Finger Lakes region.
( Many years ago, I had to direct a spring under a house and out the
other side.)
I think you are on the right path.
I would line the ditch with what I call landscape fabric to keep dirt
from silting in the trench.
There are "socks" that slide over perferated pipe for the same purpose.
