I hope I'm not stepping on any toes posting here, but I've put together
a site dedicated to corn stoves which involves saving energy so I
thought it was fiting here. Everything from reviews, to fuel costs, to
mfg listings are up on the site now. I'm working with several people
to get installation photos, etc. up there too. If you're in the market
for a stove, or already have one and would like to learn more and/or
share hints and tricks you've picked up, please take a look. FYI - I
don't work for any stove companies/web sites/dealers etc. and you can't
buy ANYTHING from me on the site. Thanks for looking!

Had no idea wheat burners existed - will delve into that site to see
what the story is. Corn works best for me, being in the middle of corn
country here in South Dakota. I also like the idea of biodiesel, just
don't have a diesel auto yet. Once I get a corn burner going in my
house, that will probably be my next step! The more renewable (and
local) an energy source is - the more I want to use it. Saw an article
on biodiesel in Home Power Magazine that was fascinating. Thanks for
the feedback Steve, hope you have a warm winter!

Corn will get more expensive, some places use natural gas to dry it ;~)

So how well does corn work in a cornstove if it's got more moisture than
you'd want for feed corn? Do you _have_ to dry it, if you're going to
burn it?

Most stoves require 15% moisture or less, some stove mfg's say that
theirs will run all the way up to 19%.

True corn will probably go up in cost, however if you stockpile a bit
now you'll be better off as it is usually cheapest around harvest time.
Even if it does go up, I'm still thinking it will be significantly
less than natural gas, plus it's a renewable source. Funny when you
think of how dependant on gas we are - let's see, to get corn we have
to have a tractor, the tractor runs on gas (diesel), then we have to
haul it to town, probably use a semi or a pickup that runs on - you
guessed it - gas (again could be diesel, could be unleaded), then you
have to get to the elevator and pick it up in your gas powered pickup -
only way out is diesel the whole way and biodiesel at that (even then
somewhere down the line your're probably using gas powered things to
make that). Uhhgg - it never ends!! ;-)

FYI to anyone looking for a corn stove for this year (winter 2005-2006).

I have talked to almost 20 different retail dealers and distributors and
it appears that corn and pellet stoves are pretty much sold out
NATIONWIDE (USA) until about March 2006! All manufacturers, all models.

If you are looking for one and luck into finding one in inventory, then
you better snap it up quick, or it will be gone.

My search continues, but it doesn't look promising for this season.

That is very true Dave. Locally, my dealer tells me he wont get any
more stoves in until mid-November (Quadra-Fire) and there is a waiting
list for them at that! Grab one while you can... if you can...

My boss bought a Harman pellet stove early in the summer at a 25% discount.
I only mention that to indicate that few saw this coming. The same shop
could sell that stove today at a healthy premium.
