has anyone applied for the program where post-storm Fema reimburses up to 2k for a
generator?

it's now going on week 2 without power since hurricane wilma and we're projected to be
without power up to 4 weeks

the program is something similar to
http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=19639

if you know more of this program, does it require a visit in person by a Fema
inspector?

yes a vist from fema rep is needed. You must have a receipt for the
generator.

I don't understand how it would be possible for Fema to send a rep to over 3 million
homes?
Surely they have a way to determine which areas are without power?

It actually sounds worse than that. The way I read it, you have to be
in a designated "power failure" zone, you have to have bought the
generator within a certain timeframe, the rep has to visit, and the
power still has to be out when he visits.

It'd be nice to be reimbursed, but I wouldn't bank on it...

just filed my application and immediately after that received all details

this is now in effect for at least area 1609 (Disaster ID) which means Wilma
for Miami,Dade,Broward

FEMA will reimburse up to $835.95 for a generator purchased after 23.10.2005

They require you to have obtained your own personal REG ID (9-digits) by
filling online application OR you may phone FEMA at 1-800-621-3361 and they
will take application over the phone

Only you have your REG ID you will FAX the receipt for the generator
purchase to FEMA at 1-800-827-8112
You FAX must contain the following information
1. Your personal application ID (REG ID 9-digits)
2. Your Social Security Number
3. Code 1609 (Disaster ID)

FEMA will cut you a check or electronically submit funds (if you so elected
at application time) some 4-6 weeks later

You can purchase a more expensive generator, they will reimburse only up to
the limit amount

Henh, sounds believeable. 8*)

Let us know how it goes! Of course, those of us with generators, ATS,
food and water stores get no reimbursement. Wonder if I can buy a
generator that I don't need, get reimbursed, and sell it to a
neighbor. 8*)

Just kidding, really, don't envy you the circumstances at all!

I can confirm hank's notes as I just received same information and same details

No FEMA rep visit is necessary, you only need your FEMA ID which is assigned at the
time of the application

Now I also wonder about the tax consequences of this "aid", ie. will IRS require any
FEMA aid to be reported as "income" next April when doing 2005 return?

All it took for us was a call to FEMA, and the amount was direct
deposited in our account within 2 days, this was after Katrina. It
appeared to us was the criteria that we had to relocate to Oklahoma.

A man from FEMA came to actually look at the generator about 6 wweks
later and inspect other damage. You will have to fax the receipt for
the generator to the number he gives you. Ours was not legible he
said, so he said to just hold on to the receipt, this was even after
he had come and looked at the thing.

They will also pay for a chain saw, and probably other things, but you
must have clear, legible receipts for everything (only if you are
white, If you are a "minority" you don't need anything, just tell
them they are being racist asking for proof).

My ex bought a $2000 generator before the last storm , ( Panhandle of
Florida ) she went down to the Fema office after the storm and got (
info from my daughter ) a check to pay for it , not sure if it was for the
full amount, always a little dubious about Fema , I heard some stories
about them wanting money they gave you after insurance settlements and they
want the money NOW or they slap on stiff penalties and interest
