Anyone have the specs for the diodes on the Coleman 5000 watt
generators? I'm wondering if I can pick up a couple replacements at
Radio Snack or some such place. The Coleman crew is lost is Boca, and
I'm down to my back-up back-up power supply. The old pn is 6006 if
that is any help. The cap and windings are fine - a little out of
spec, but not enough to matter, and no burning of windings, etc..

1N6006 by any chance? Fairly generic part, shouldn't matter where it's
from.

Seems kinda small (18vt .5 w) for the purpose - field winding on
rotor? The 6006 is the coleman pn. Maybe I can look at the can
under a magnifying glass and get something more definitive.

Some day the techs are going to explain to the engineers why part
numbers shouldn't be deceptive. The engineers, of course, won't listen.
I think I'll invent a new RAM chip and call it a 74LS138.

Heh, call it a 12AX7 and see who the old-timers are.

Nothing on the can that I could see. Looks like I wait until tomorrow
for the lost Coleman guys. No big screen tv or long computer time
tonight. Powering down to minimal usage mode.

Feh. Anodes and cathodes and grids were for sissies.

Real (old) men used a coil, a condensor, and a spark gap.
Keep the bakelite knob on the key dry.

Before that, they banged rocks together to get dit's and dah's

Hi,

Could it be a UM6006 'pin' diode, 600vr 2.5W?

cheers,
Pete.

Ah, more likely to be a PR6006 fast recovery rectifier, 800Vr 6A, body
measures .35" dia and length?

(from: http://www.datasheet4u.com/search.php)

cheers,
Pete.

I think that one works. The Coleman guy didn't know the specs on
them, and there is no marking on them at all, but what you describe
would seem to fit the general requirements. The ones that I have are
screw down with a spade lug at the top. They screw to an aluminum bar
heat sink.

Jeeez Louise, This isn't Rocket Science, guys. It is just a field diode
for a small genset. It really doesn't matter what the PIV Rating is as
long as it is above 200PIV. It really will not matter is the AMP
Capacity is very much larger than the original spec. So, figure that
the Current Gain of the genset is oh say 20 or so, then take the output
Amps, and divide it by the Current Gain, double that for safety, and go
see what is available in the same package in that Amp Rating. OR...
Just buy the highest Amp Rated diode that is Mfg'd in the same package
as the one your replacing......... OR just figure buying two 10 amp 200
PIV diodes and stick them in there and see if they work.....Either they
will be just fine, or they will overheat from high IR Losses and fail,
and you just back where you started and buy higher Amp Rated diodes next
time......

I went to the Shack and bought some according the the current rating and not
the voltage rating (couldn't seem to find any with both). So far they have
held up just fine. If I remember correctly they were rated for 50 volts.

Thanks, this was the type of info I was looking for. I'll keep that

Oops, should have read your post more carefully...

Is the package like any of these?:

A post to sci.electronics.repair you might get some more ideas.

Now that I thought about it a while longer I bought two sets of diodes: one
with the proper amperage rating (I think it was 6 amps, but not sure) and
another with the higher voltage rating. I used the ones with the higher
amperage and these were on a 5000 watt generator head. I could not find the
specific diode that was in there but I deduced from the number the
approximate rating based upon others that I found that had higher and lower
numbers. If you need the specific RS number I go look for the package.

Don't bother. I got the replacement diodes from the Coleman guys, and
sometime over the next year I'll pore over junker equipment and such
to pull parts like this for projects.

I found it a good PR ploy by Coleman to have qualified emergency
repair teams in the area after Wilma, rather than rely on the local
dealers. I was less impressed that one of the Boca bitches reached a
middle manager and diverted a team to her home for onsite help,
leaving customers at the repair site in the lurch - after they had
been instructed by Coleman tech and support people to go there for
help. I won't complain too much though, I know just how crazy and
instimidating those BBs can be to the uninititated.

Wow, I'm feeling very naive. I had to look up what a Boca XXXXX was and I'm
still not sure.

You've probably got it right enough. Boca is a plain 'ole Florida
retirement town that somehow developed a superiority complex.
