Hi all, I made a 12v gen (4hp eng, car alt, & a 12v car battery).
I use it to run a 120v battery charger off a cheap 1000w inverter.
(as apposed to charging batterys directly off the 80amp alt).

While running without the inverter the volts are 14.7 - 14.9, when
I start the inverter most times the voltage spikes to over 15 volts,
shutting down the inverter @ more than 15v. So I figured bad battery,
or crappy regulator inside the alt. Had a battery isolator laying
around and remembered you lose .5 or so of a volt going through the
isolator. Put the alt to the isolator and the battery off one of the
legs.

Still with me? Anyway, now I get a steady 14.6v at the battery, When
the inverter starts up the volts drop for a second or so, then come back
to 14.6, no over voltage to shut down the inverter. But now at the alt
term I get 15.5 volts. Is this the max the regulater inside the alt is
set at? Is this bad for the alt?

I'm not too knowledgeable about the innards of alternators but 14.6V is
about the maximum for charging lead acid batteries. It tends to suggest a
faulty alternator or you have the connections to the alternator wrong
somehow.

Have a look at the 12V generator problem thread down there somewhere.

Alternators will often charge at 15.6 vdc in cold climates.

Norminal cell voltage + 0.17% per degree C below 25C
