Waste oil fired water heater??

| Has anyone out here on the list ever converted a gas-fired water
heater to burn waste motor oil? I'm thinking something like a
babington or other forced air burner in place of the gas-fired ring on
an old water heater installed outside, burning old engine oil to heat
the shop/garage using an antifreeze mixture and a fan-forced radiator
in the garage? I want something that will burn quite clean - not smoky
and smelly, and that can be adjusted to heat up fast, then maintain
reduced heat, rather than cycling.

No I have not built anything. When I was looking for my new solar water
heater I noticed Lockinvar had some oil fired water heaters. Might be a
place to start.
We had a gas powered pressure washer that heated the water for washing our
work trucks in the winter time. Sure would not want to use it inside
however. The used oil burner could be noticed even out side.

For building plans .....most hobby steam groups have about four different
plans for oil burners.Babington is one of them......google lightsteam .
They burn clean if done right......illegal, if they smoke in most areas.
Stanley steamcars used a vaprizer coil like on a Coleman gasoline stove.
2ft long instead of the 6inches used on a Coleman since oil boils at a
higher temp. than gasoline.
Also had a gasoline pilot light.
They beat EVERY IC car hands down at the CARB stations scattered all over
California,until 1985.
The year NOx started to be monitored.
