Any good public access or low cost news servers available? Rogers is
dropping usenet support on Dec 15. Would like to be able to continue
usenet access.

Join Golden. They have the best I have seen. Keep some
posts back to 1999 and retain binaries way back too.

I have 3.5 Mbps service for $29.95

news.individual.net: about $15/year (I think it's 10 euros) for text-only
newsgroups, low spam, no alt.sex groups.

news.individual.net is about 15 bucks a year, very reliable, filters out
nearly all spam, and has fast newsfeeds.

You can always do it by Google:
http://groups.google.com

Do some Google searchers for free usenet news servers
and similar queries. There was a good one in Germany,
but I don't remember the name. A few years ago free
text news servers were readily available; but servers for
binary groups were hard to find--I don't know the current
situation.

I'd send you over to alt.free.newsservers, but there is a flamewar
going on there right now. In the mean time, aioe news is working
well for me (free and only an occasional outage).

That should have done it. Go to http://news.aioe.org to see
the setup info. Note that the server is located in Italy. They
run a service routine to clean out old messages and free up drive
space in the middle of their night. Which happens to be
prime time here. So sometimes you get connection timeouts.
So try again and see if it's better. BTW: It's working now
because I'm posting from there.
