(Off-topic, rambling on a tangent)
>From what I recall, Japanese cars in the early 70s were pretty damn
crappy. I recall Datsun B210s virtually biodegrading when exposed to
the winter salt they put on the road here in the Midwest. I recall
Hondas being tiny and underpowered, with maybe a 650 cc engine and 12
inch wheels. And maybe it was Toyota or maybe this was a Datsun a
friend had that ate up brakes in astonishingly short intervals. After
getting tired of paying the dealer, he did the brakes himself and found
such tiny pads, we wondered if they would have been adequate on a
go-cart.
The major import competition was coming from Europe. For instance, I
had a 73 Mercury Capri (German made) and a 75 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe.
Of course, the Japanese improved dramatically.
