I included replacement windows in that $4000 figure.
I insulated all top floor walls and the attic to R-50 for $600, doing
the work manually. One Oneonta NY winter I saved over $700 in heating
costs. The $3000 for replacement windows was a longer term savings
but well worth the cost for convenicence and comfort...I can open a
window now without a crowbar. Just putting a plywood trapdoor over
the old attic stairs (that were losely enclosed below) made a huge
difference. This house was unliveable upstairs the first summer I was
here...near attic temps. Now its not much warmer than downstairs.
