The Brits didn't leave until they thought the expense of the war wasn't
worth it as British America was a financial dead loss. The British decided
not to pursue the civil war - the British colonists didn't win by force of
arms. The Brits made 3 times as much from Jamaica than the 13 colonies.

A mistake they never repeated. No one forced the Brits at the point of a gun
again - although the British colonists could have been defeated. The point
was that no one forces their hand by arms.
The British in the war of 1812 could have easily taken over the whole
country but never, so an armed population did little there. The British
won, as their intention was get the US being a threat to, and out of Canada.
When that was done the British withdrew, after taking the war right into the
White House itself.
