We are planning for a fairly large combination pv and wind turbine off
grid system for our mountain top home and shop. With total costs well
into the tens of thousands of dollars for all the parts, where do you
direct your bucks when you can't outlay all the cash necessary to
purchase it all at once? I don't want to have to redo and resize
equipment or wiring as we build this system.

Come up with a plan and work the plan.
Do lots of research with the companies and make sure that if they decide to
obsolete a product your not in a pickle.

Find local people doing what you want to do and talk to them. Learn from
their mistakes and experiences.

If the acquisition time isn't going to be too long, you could start
with the inverter/charger, batteries, system monitoring, and backup
generator. Might as well buy the full battery capacity up front, but
if your intended inverters are modular, you could start with partial
capacity. Make sure the generator is something you won't mind running
perhaps several hours per day. The smallest you can get away with is
best, but a large fuel tank (perhaps propane) and electric start are
both nice to have. Add wind and solar as budget allows. PV is easy to
add in increments.
