Author manure->methane -> power

i was watching mad max 3, and they were using pig dung to generate
electricity. and i started to wonder how effective that would be, and
how would it be done.

i assume the methane is used to heat water to steam and the generate
power that way, and really anything burnable would do the same, i get
enough junkmail it seems to power a few things

also was thinking during winter, wood etc heat could be used to make
steam power as well

does any one have any referenced materials on steam generators?

methane digestion of manure is an old tradition. it's usually burned for
steam or sometimes used in stationary engine driven generators. It can
be used in natural gas appliances like hot water heaters, kitchen
stoves, dryers and refridgerators. for more methane info, see

Ready made or plans?

You mean monotube, didn't you?
Same as steam jenny steam cleaner or tankless water heater ,except hotter
steam usually.
Easiest to built ,but trickest to control if you are needing dry steam for a
engine or worse yet turbine.(blade have relative impact speed of 6000fps or
mach7 roughly, if water droplets are present.)The reason folks add a
standpipe to make it a Lamonte instead.

Movies are generally a bad source of technology ideas, but it's being
done - I know of more dairy farms doing cow manure than pig farms but
suppose it possible with either. Probably smells better with cow manure
than pig manure, I'm guessing - not a hard guess..

On any feasible scale one generally uses the methane to fuel an internal
combustion generator. The slightest bit of research will illustrate why
(hint, turbines are not efficient on a small scale; second hint - steam
has many ways to make your life all too interesting).

Drop methane digester into any search engine.

I would think that it would be more efficient either to ferment
grain/organic matter and produce alcohol or to press oil bearing
stuff and produce vegetable oil. The first could be fed (after a
big of distilling) into gas style engines and the later could be
used on diesel style engines.

One of the biggest digestor is for a livestock feedlot in Okla.......the
place was built from the groud up with that in mind.
So the slabs drain into the digestor etc..nnot sure if they dewater to
proper density.

I'd have to think that if you can smell it, you're wasting methane. :-)

Yeah, and I was thinking, why pigs; why not.....flush the toilet, power your
house; I mean, why should the school cafeterias get all the benefits ;)? I
was thinking I would like to watch some of the Mad Max movies.
