Author FIREPLACE QUESTION

I am operating a fireplace for the first time. I know to keep the flu
open when there is a fire, and I have a four pipe system which the logs
sit on, and a fan that blows hot air out the top of the pipes.

My question is this: I noticed there is a small, oh.. four by six
little metal "trapdoor" at the bottom of the fireplace. I opened it up
and couldn't see anything, just come cobwebs.

What is this little trapdoor used for????

You can dump you ashes down there. Should be a cleanout door in the
basement.
Not the best way to eliminate ashes though.

Just for background, you keep the "flue" open.

The tubes & blower thing is an attempt to extract heat from the fire
and discharge it into the house. Hot item in the mid-seventies.

Problem is, when the outside temp is low enough to make heating
desirable, the sheer flow rate of makeup air (replacing the thousands
of cfm going up the flue) makes any net heating effect miniscule to
negative overall. There are options which can claim efficiency.
