Author Fridge without a freezer section?
William P.N. Smith

We're looking for a fridge without a freezer, to maximize fridge space
(there's a freezer in the other room, and a separate icemaker), but I
don't seem to be finding anything but bar/dorm size units. There must
be something out there, and this group would know if it if anyone
would. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Certainly exists.

I have one sitting in my kitchen! It's a Westinghouse Aurora RP342 model.

However, as I'm in Australia, and it was locally manuactured, I doubt
you'd find it in the States. Still, if a little old South Australian
manufacturer can see the need for it, surely that same demand exists
over there.

If I recall, it was one half of a "pidgeon pair" system. ie. the right
hand cabinet was the fridge, while the left hand was the freeezer. I
just didn't buy the freezer bit.

Pal

Some results by searching for "all fridge"...

http://tinyurl.com/blr88 11 cu.ft.

http://www.frigidaire.com/products/...productlist.asp
16 and 17 cu.ft.

Just a thought... perhaps there are some models of single-door
fridge/freezers that wouldn't need much effort to remove or modify the
freezer cupboard.

The wife (ahem) "dislikes" Sears appliances, I was hoping for a
reccomendation for something energy efficient and more tuned to the
homepower crowd.

There was talk of a device used in the "keg" crowd which converted a
chest freezer into a fridge. Essentially a remote (wired or wireless)
thermostat that controled the power supplied to the device.

Since we've been looking for an "all fridge" we've considered getting
a freezer and one of those devices. (and conveniently, an all freezer
of a given size it often *much* less expensive than an all fridge, or
even a fridge/freezer of the same size)

We recently bought a Crosley 17 cu ft refrigerator only model, as it
was the only one we could find that had reversible door swing--all the
others seemed to be designed to be used with a corresponding upright
freezer and had a fixed door swing. It uses much less--maybe a
fourth?--of the power our old 30 year old Fridgidaire manual defrost
unit used. I did measure power consumption of both units with a
Kill-A-Watt meter, but can't find the figures at the moment.
When we ordered the unit, it was ordered with a different brand name,
Wood's, a Canadian company, but the unit we received is marked
"Crosley". Apparently Woods make most of the freezers sold in the US.
We are pleased with the unit.

Many fridges have reversible doors and can be changed.

However, many fridges with reversible doors are really
not that reversible. The ice water and drawers are
usually side specific. They can be a pain in the XXX
once the door hinges are reversed. Some drawers will
not pull out unless the door is folded back at 270
degrees open.

We found, however, that none of the major brands of refrigerators that
are 100% refrig, had reversible doors. If someone can find others, not
made by Woods that have reversible doors, I'd like to know about it. We
looked at Sanyo, Sears, Fridgidaire, Amana, and many other brands, both
in stores and on the internet.

We haven't found an upright freezer with a reversible
door either. We just can't handle a right hinge and
still open it.

It's called an " All Fridge "
Woods - Guelph ... I think.
Probably one of the few appliances still made in Canada.
.... if we're lucky ..

Crystal Cold has a refridgerator only. It does not use any electricity
and is very good looking my wife tells me. The Amish make it out of a
Amana that they strip of it's electrics.

What do they do with it? Convert it to propane?
