| Applications sought for Future City competition
Monday October 16, 2:36 pm ET
Organizers of the Future City competition in which seventh and eighth
graders design cities of the future say students at 31 schools around
Albany, N.Y., have registered so far.
The deadline for registration is Oct. 27.
The program is designed to increase students' mathematics, science and
technology skills and perhaps to kindle an interest in considering
engineering as a career. The founding sponsors of the event are Plug
Power Inc. and Clough Harbour & Associates LLP.
Participants use a teacher and an engineer volunteer to guide their
efforts in designing a city. They use computer modeling software
SimCity 3000 and they also write an essay about an engineering-related
topic. This year's topic is fuel cells.
A panel of judges will judge students' work on Jan. 13, 2007, at Hudson
Valley Community college in Troy, N.Y. First-place winners will join
teams from 38 other regions for an all-expense-paid trip to the Future
City National Finals in Washington, D.C.
The grand prize is a trip to the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala.
