Really stupid question about diesel engines
|
|
| Ignoramus29049 2006-10-17, 1:25 pm |
| I have a diesel engine (4 banger Onan L series/Cummins A series it
looks like) in what looks like an original crate. (funny, the crate
has a little window, I guess so that the engine does not get bored
from sitting in the dark)
Can I lift it out of the crate with a crane or do you think it is
bolted to the floor (it is hard to see). IOW, do I need to disassemble
the crate.

My bet is that it is bolted down, it's trip would be unpleasant if it
was bouncing around loose inside the crate. The best thing would be to
take the sides off and put caster on the bottom so you can give it
rides around the shop.

Thank you. Yeah. I made a nice platform last night -- a 2 by 4 feet
wooden platform made of two 4 ft long 2x6 boards, a few 2' long 2x4s
across, and 5" swivel casters, just for moving those engines around.
It s very easy to maneuver, I will use it tonight while unloading the
first two things, the onan 4 banger and MEP-017A generator.

Most of the MIL spec Crates have the engine bolted to the base, and
are designed to be dissasembled with the engine still mounted on the
base.

OK, thanks Bruce... While we are at it... I will soon bring home an
Onan DJC. The military 24v kind. I looked at it today when picking up
other things (could not take everything at once, so I left the
DJC). It looks like it has all the pieces. My question is that I want
to run it, but it lacks filters.
Do you know NAPA or other catalog number for the primary and secondary
fuel filters and oil filter? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!

I don't know anything specific about your engine/crate, but almost
everything of that size/weight is bolted down and the crate comes off to
give full access to the equipment for lifting. Your window is a bit odd
though... If it looks trivial to hook a crane to the engine without
removing the crate, perhaps that is the way. I would not expect that
though.
Usually the crate will be held together using bolts or something so that
removal is non-destructive. Sometimes the crate is removed in 5 parts
(four sides and top each bolted to each other and sides to base) and
sometimes it is intended to come off together as one part (sides bolted
only to base).

This one is nailed together, I think. No biggie, I will carefully pry
it open.

Not familiar with the MIL Spec's for the Militarized DJC's, except that
I know that they don't use the civilian filter set that the rest of the
xDJx sets use. I think Gunny, over on Smokstak, haqd an answer for you.
