| Because I have seen a similar situation with oil 25 yrs ago
With gas prices rising at almost twice the cost of electricity I have
started to think
Apart from installation costs, a gas system can attract a £200 pa
maintenance charge
A day off work to wait in for repair guy
This only lasts for about 10 yrs max as the boiler is deemed too old.
Then £2000ish to replace
Even without a special night meter and storage devices, I have started to
think
Could individual timed convectors work out cheaper over a ten yr period?
little or no moving parts,
no black art repairs,
has anyone done the sum?
It seems to me that the only calculations are the bills compared to last
year and not an overall cost of running, maintaining, repairing, and
replacing

Lets get those more realistic. =A350 a year safety test, a day off work
if youre at work every day of every week, boiler life of 25 years, then
around =A31000 to replace it.

Lets get those more realistic. £50 a year safety test, a day off work
if youre at work every day of every week, boiler life of 25 years, then
around £1000 to replace it.
I had forgotton about the saftey test
A maintainance contract is on average £17.50 pm, they will not cover one
over 10 yr old and many companies cease to provide spare parts after 10 yrs,
the boiler I was quoting was a floor standing condensing combi at £1250 plus
fitting, I work mon/sat as do most repair centers.
I asked about the sum thinking someone might have already done it, I will
now set about producing some figures

yes but other companies will still provide parts for them.

I guess it all depends, some are 500, some thousands.

yeah In fairness though, most people dont work sat, so they wont
havhe to pay the extra day off.

Good!
17.50pcm =3D =A3210/year.
Per boiler life time of 25 yrs thats =A35250. And thats just an
maintenance contract!! One would have to be rather mathematically
challenged to buy such a thing.

Good!
17.50pcm = £210/year.
Per boiler life time of 25 yrs thats £5250. And thats just an
maintenance contract!! One would have to be rather mathematically

| We wend completely electric, with some very nice electric radiators from
Caladou, these work out at an overall bill for the winter months of £300 per
quarter (for 2 quarters) then £100 for the other 2 quarters, making the
annual cost of power, heat, water and everything of £800 per year.
Our alternative was to go for LPG or Oil Combi since we're off grid (no gas
supply) and if you take everything into account, you'll find that this
option is cheaper, cleaner, and much less wasteful than any other form of
heating.
Electric heaters put almost all their energy into your room, unlike any
other 'burning fuel' heating system that puts 33% of it up the vent!!, how
stupid is that??. We don't need to pay for Oil/LPG deliveries, we don't need
a ruddy great tank outside, and we don't need a maintenance contract.
To make things even more attractive we installed a wind turbine and we've
connected this to the grid, so the bills are even more offset. The above
figures were taken before we had the turbine, these have since reduced to
£400 per year, with the free power fro the turbine...
Beat that!!!

I would love to know just what job NT does, to assume "most people" don't
work on a Saturday? when one third of the british workforce do!!

It has been stated that no one wants to
cover a boiler more than ten years old, so this statment is incorrect

Do boilers only breakdown on saturdays? or is that the only day the repairs
are done?

If 1/3 of the British workforce works on Saturday, then most people
dont work on Saturday. Ya?
Also most households contain more than one person, meaning likelihood
of an adult being home on Sat is higher than 2/3.
As a rough guess, if we say average 2 adults per household, and
probability of Saturday working independant, we'd fine that 1/3x1/3 =3D
only one in 9 households have no-one avilable to be home on saturday.
