Nor is this new. I've spent a considerable bit of time over the last week reading a
700 page e-tome called "The General Electric Report", 1919 edition. This is a
monthly news magazine that GE used to publish.
One of the fascinating things is to see how many power plants in isolated areas were
designed around huge spark-ignited engines fueled with "producer gas" or a mix of
hydrogen and CO produced by passing steam over heated coal. GE sold packaged
generating units consisting of the generator and engine, the gas producer and all the
switchgear.
One town in Iowa was notable. The town went together and bought the generating plant
and had GE install it, running it break-even as a cooperative. They ran the plant
from 5PM until 10PM (11PM on Saturday nights. Yeeehaw :-) and from noon on Tuesday,
laundry day, so the women could run their brandy-new electric washing machines.
Of particular interest was the cost of the electricity to the user - 10 cents per
KWH!!! That was a veritable fortune back then, equivalent to several dollars per KWH
today.
It is also interesting to read the hands-wringers using just about the same language
as today, bemoaning the emminent exhaustion of the world's supply of oil caused by
all those new cars appearing on the road. Those who ignore history are doomed to
look stupid, or something like that.

Funny how that works.
