Who cares? We use kilometres here in Canada.

Actually, until WW2, there was a very slight difference between the U.S.
and British inch, which was reflected in the other units of length.
This meant that British-made bullets wouldn't fire well from U.S.-made
guns, and so on. So an agreement was made that standardized both inches
to be *exactly* 25.4 millimetres, which was roughly half-way between
the two earlier inches. It also meant that metric tools, e.g. in France
after its liberation, could be used on inch-defined things. This exact
ratio between the inch and millimetre still exists. It is, as far as I
know, the only really exact conversion factor between metric and
Imperial or U.S. units.
