This is all ancient history now, anyway. Official Canadian fuel usage
ratings are now done in litres per 100 kilometres. Many auto-makers
still quote "miles per gallon" in their advertising, along with the
official metric figures. But, strangely, interconverting the numbers
shows that they must be using U.S. gallons, rather than our old
Imperial ones! Why they do this, I don't know, since the consumption
looks less if larger gallons are used.

I just use Liters, then it doesn't matter. The US gallon has 3.785
liters , the Smart car is rated Highway at 3.7 l liters per 100 km.
100 km = 62.14 miles. So it goes over 60 miles on a US gallon.
