| -> I recall seeing a comparison of a big Ford truck against the Mini at
-> the same speed, probably 30mph into a *deformable* barrier. The Mini
-> driver could open the doors and at a pinch could drive away, the Ford
-> driver would have been lucky to ever walk again.
Whwn I was at university, my room-mate used to drive across the
Pennines (a range of high hills / low mountains in England) to visit
his girlfriend every weekend. His vehicle was a Mini. One Monday, he
arrived back without it, and with a Band-Aid on his ear. He had
encountered a patch of black ice, gone through a stone wall, and
knocked down a tree. He had been wearing a seatbelt (unusual back then).
His worst injury was the cut on his ear that had been done by flying
glass. After the accident, he had walked back to the road, flagged down
a bus, and continued his journey.
A few days later, we went to the scrapyard where his car had been taken
to salvage whatever we could. It was extremely badly damaged. If I
hadn't known otherwise, I'd have thought that the driver must have been
killed.
Ever since then, I have always worn seatbelts.
