I am looking to control some electro magnetic locks, I would like to be able
to monitor them to see if they are locked or not.

I was not sure if X10 is the best way to do this, what other (cheep) ways
can this be done?

Securitron magnetic locks have an option available called "Senstat" that is
integral to the lock and monitors the lock state (the plate is seated and
the lock is powered).
