For a barn that I will be building for myself, I was wondering if there is
any reason why I couldn't use - used carpet pad as a free insulation
material under the slab?

If you don't mind cracks and/or movement. It's insulation, but I'm not
sure that's the best place to recycle padding.

aaaaaaaaaaa - I don't think so

Whats the R value of the carpet pad, i.e., will it function well? Will it
rot?

Stick with R10.

RO,
I wish I really had an answer. The normal product to use is
rigid foam board. It has some compressive strength value, though
I don't remember what it is. I would be concerned that the carpet
padding would not have any compressive strength, and on that basis
I would hesitate to use it. It may do swell as a vertical cold
barrier on the inside of the footing as a thermal break.

Random thoughts - I usually do not answer if I do not know or have
experience. Probably should not have this time.

I think the padding (open cell foam) would saturate with water and
eventually give no insulating value at all. In fact the soft nature invites
cracks and if it freezes, the trapped water will invite frost-heave.

most carpet pad is 'open cell' that means it will absorb
water..and it will also compress almost totally..so you would
get very little insulation value.

I don't see how putting a material under the concrete that will absorb
moisture, compress and rot is going to help anything.

at least he asked. (good move)

With all the negitive replies, is there at least one good reason to
use carpet padding, under a slab. lol

The only one I can think of is.......you wouldn't have to haul the padding
to the dump.

OK gang - you talked me out of it. I guess there's no free lunch. Nice to
make your mistakes in print instead of in the real world. Thanks for the
good info.

If you're building a garage, glueing the carpet to the walls might provide
some insulation. Sound deadening too, which is a common usage of old
carpet. If the carpet is seriously "used", it could be a little close to
the nose...
