Author Install beadboard ceiling over acoustic tile?

Hi everyone.

I've just bought a new (old) house... from 1930s. The family room used
to be a screened in porch I believe. There is really ugly acoustic
ceiling tile in the room which i hate.... I want to put in a beadboard
ceiling myself, and I am wondering if I can just leave the acoustic
tile (12x12 tiles which look like white painted cork) where it is and
simply nail the beadboard into the joists through the existing ceiling
(using a stud finder). In this way, It would almost be like going over
drywall.

It's quite possible that these tiles have asbestos in them, so I would
have to pay the $$$ to have them properly removed. I would must rather
go right over them if that's a senseable alternative.

Are there any pro's in here that have seen this situation before? Any
advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

You won't be hitting the joists. 12x12 tile is installed on furring
strips, usually 1x2s or 1x3s. You only have to determine which way the
strips run.

Other than that - no problems.
