Author Wood siding on steel framed construction?

I've got a steel framed house. I'd like to put wood siding on the front
of the house, but I'm not clear as to how it would be installed. Does
anyone have any experience with this? Am I crazy? If you know of any
wood siding installers in the Brooklyn, NY I'd be interested in hearing
from you.

If wood siding is not a possiblity I think we'll do cement stucco. I've
heard of serious problems with EIFS, so I think we'd be going with real
cement. Any recommendations for the New York area on that?

Have you looked at fiber cement siding?
It should be more resistant to deterioration and hold paint better than
wood.

What siding is on the rest of the building?

What is the existing exterior?
What is the existing sheathing? (if any)
Have you done anything to mitigate the thermal transfer through
the studs?

You should be able to install either an OSB or plywood sheathing
to the metal studs, install proper house wrap barrier/dry sheet,
and install wood siding. There are many who would suggest
vertical drainage plane material behind the siding and make sure
you back prime the siding.

There are certainly more options.

There is double layer of cement board 5/8in. (total of 1 1/4 inch) on
the exterior, and we're using spray in insulation since it does a
better job of filling the metal stud cavity and it provides much better
sound insulation.

I was considering having the installer use 1x3 wood strapping screwed
into the metal studs, and then nail into them. That would give a
vertcal drainage plane behind the siding. Not planning on painting the
siding, but using an exterior Cabot stain possibly their PRO V.T. line.
Not using paint is one of the reasons that I don't want to use screws.

Dan G is on the right track as far as I'm concerned.
I'd do it this way:
fiber cement sheathing ( existing )
Weather barrier ( I and some local forensic engineers prefer two layers
of #15 bldg paper )
The 1x3 (verical) furring strips (as you suggest )
Wood siding coated on all surfaces as Dan G suggests

I must note that the end grain is most important as it sucks up water.
It is also the most difficult to get coated as carpenters don't like to
wait for the operation.

Others have addressed the proper application of wood siding on your
installation but I'm curious why you went with cement board, and two
layers at that. Were you originally planning on cement stucco?

Double layer of cement board is for fire rating. We had to do it on the
lot lines, and although the front and back isn't on a lot line, we
decided that we should just continue it on the front and back (which
are much smaller compared to the sides)
