Author window installation

I'm wondering if you should "hang" or "set" residential windows when
installing? I framed homes for about 7 yrs. in the 1990's and we always
set our windows on the sill and leveled and shimmed from there. I never
really thought anything about this until recently when someone told me
that was wrong. He said that a window should be hung.( not touching the
sill) and squared and shimmed from there. What is the correct way and
is there different methods for different windows (vinyl, wood, etc.)?
Thanks for your help.

hanging a window is a new one on me. I know of two manufacturers, H
windows and Marvin which specifically state the bottom of the window
should sit on shims. might surf around to different window makers and
see if you can get their installation instructions.

The window should sit in the middle of the framed area. No window side,
bottom/top/left/right should actually touch the framed area. Reason is no
framed area for a window is perfectly square/perfectly level/perfectly
plumb. That's what you're trying to do when setting the window.

Andersen specifies that the window should set on two shims, one near each side,
nothing across the middle. Adjust each shim thickness to level the window, then
square up if needed and nail all flanges.

I've done quite a bit of surfing already to find out how different
manufacturers recommend installation and I didn't find one who said that the
bottom should not sit on the sill (with shims if needed).

Thanks for your help everyone. I couldn't imagine that we were
installing windows incorrectly for 7 yrs and nobody corrected us. I
printed these responses out so I can show this "know it all" guy that
he is full of it. Thanks again.

I would guarantee you that any mfr/rep would tell you that if your sill
(framing) were dead level and flat that they wouldnt care if it sat on
the sill. As others have said, this is rarely the case so shimming at
the base is the "spec'd" way to do it. It however is rarely done that
way in the vast majority of homes unless the sill is crowned severely or
extremely out of level.
