Stair construction - doorways at a landing

| What are the typical rules about adding a door to a stair landing? I
want to be able to add a door to the down side of a stair landing for a
set of stairs leading down into my basement. I see by code the landing
should be at a min. 36" clear, but this is not a problem unless you
have to subtract door swing from the clear space required.
The stair I intend drops a number of risers and then has a landing,
with the stair turning 90 degrees and continuing down from the
landing. I would like to place the door in the wall that defines the
edge of the landing. The door would open into the landing space.
Any help would be great.

| International Residential Code 2003 does not require a landing on both
sides of a door that is not part of a "means of egress" for fire.
However, there ought to be room to stand on the landing and open the
door. I would, myself, would never place a door at the top of a flight
of stairs without a landing on both sides. I don't think it is either
comfortable or safe.
