I'm now mulling over this idea: how to put a round dome on top of a square
frame of 20' x 20'. A geodesic dome might be easier than a perfectly round
dome. The trick is attaching the dome base to the top of the square walls, and
determining the width of the dome base itself. A 20' diameter dome will lay on
the middle of the top plate of each wall, leaving the wall corners extending
beyond the exterior of the dome and making it a challenge to roof. A diameter
that reaches to the wall corners however gives a nice exterior overhang on all
4 sides, but not much support from the wall corners.

Can't find squat on google. Is there some search term that describes this
other than "temporary insanity"?

Squinch? That's what I do when I forget my reading glasses. 8)

I would have said corbeling or pendentives, but pretty much similar in
purpose and effect.

Ouch! I've decided on a barrel roof. And the square is now a rectangle.
Sweet.

Pretty neat stuff. Thanks for the terms. What are the odds an inspector knows
what a squinch or pendentive is? Can you imagine the look on their faces at
the building department?
