Hi,

I need to cut a 4" round hole with a hole saw through an already
doubled up 2X8 sawn lumber floor joist. The joists are doubled becuase
this under the main wet wall and has to make room for alot of plumbing
pipes. There are two of these doubled up floor joists 24" O.C. The
rest of the surrounding floor is 16" O.C. and the span is
approximatelly 15'. The hole is to relocate a toilet that will require
a 4" hole to get a PVC elbow through the doubled up joist. Code says
round holes can be D/3 where D is the actual joist depth. So in my
case that would be 7.5" / 3" = 2.5". I need 4", so I am wondering if
there is some other way to reinforce the joists. My initial thought
was for a 2' long 0.25" thick steel plate through bolted to the joists
with the 4" round hole in the middle. Any thoughts on this would be
very helpful.
Upstairs is a powder room and a non-load bearing wall and the hole will
be right in the middle of the joist.
