I'm building a log home in northern wisconsin next summer. I would like
to install the walk out foundation this fall so it will be ready to go
in the spring. Can this be done? The little bit of research I have done
says it is possible. I would cover the structure with the flooring as
usual
then cover the wood with tarps. so basicly would be ready for logs in
spring.as long as I cover the wood and back fill will this work? also
can i pour the floor of the basment?

yes you can do this. in addition to tarps, you can put a layer of
plastic down--preferably without seams (40' wide plastic is
available.), then cover it with tarps. (tarps alone will surely leak).
don't panic about water either..technically, the plywood would
probably be fine with no tarps, not that i'd do it that way.

a much bigger concern is frost heaving. safest thing to do is to heat
it. i would insulate the floor above, either with rigid foam screwed
to the bottom of the joists or with fiberglass, though that is harder
to reuse. then run an electric heater. you can get 220 v construction
heaters. you might get away without heat if you are in very well
drained sand, but you are taking a risk...i have seen a floor heave in
a basement left unheated in seemingly dry sand. an additional
precaution which is good practice where you live anyway is to insulate
the outside of the foundation with 2" of rigid foam and also use 2" of
foam under the slab.
