well - water for sprinkling system

| My current house has a sprinkling system which keeps our landscaping in a great shape but costs me approximately $100/month between May and November (Seattle).
I am preparing to build a new house on a 3.8 acres lot with public water access. While most of the lot will be landscaped I will want only :-) some .5 acre (around the house) to be serviced by the sprinkling system. I am considering if the newly designed sprinkling system could be supplied with water from the well.
I would appreciate any comments about such system including cost (installation and maintenance), reliability, and functionality.
Many thanks.
If anyone knows about contractors designing and installing such things in the Seattle area, I would like to learn of them as well.

| At $100 per month a well will pay for itself in a year or two, smart
move! Here in Victoria, north of you a steel jacketed well will run about
$15 per foot. If you are sure that there is water within say 100 feet of
the surface its a no brainer. One alternative you might consider is a dry
well. This you can do yourself by piping the water off your roof into a
temporary holding area underground. Did a pit about 10-20 feet down, line
it with pond tarp, install a perforated drum and backfill with sand, then
rock, then the last foot or two with top soil. This would be even cheaper
than a well. Hope this helps!

An outside or inside fire could interfere with the electricity supply. The
pump could be inoperative in the event of a fire.
Would it be worthwhile to protect the electricity supply system for the
pump and controls? A dedicated circuit could also be useful due to the
separate breaker. Parts of the circuits in the fire should not be able to
open the circuit at the breaker for the pump or interfere with the control
system.
You may be more concerned with lawn maintenance and not with fire
prevention, however, my suggestion may be more appropriate for Southern
California.
