PONTIAC -- It will take only a few days this spring for Jehovah's
Witnesses in Pontiac to have a new kingdom hall.
Elder Forrest Miles said the new facility would be a "quick build,"
which means Jehovah's Witnesses from across the Midwest will gather
on May 31 and build it in five days.
"There is a large pool of volunteers," Miles said. "We have wanted to
build for some time now."
On Monday, the Pontiac City Council approved a subdivision plan for
the 2-acre site to the northwest of the intersection of Deerfield
Road and the abandoned Illinois Central Railroad.
The building, which will accommodate 200 people, will have a modern
design. It was selected from a basic floor plan designed by the
Jehovah's Witnesses.
"It will be a nice, but simple building," he said. "Its not too big
or lavish."
Some City Council members were concerned about the landscaping of the
area. Crews also work on the landscaping, but not at the same time as
the building project.
In addition to giving the congregation a deadline extension for
landscaping, the council gave it a variance allowing 48 parking
spaces instead of the required 50.
In June 2003, Jehovah's Witnesses in Bloomington built a hall on
Emerson Street as a quick build. That building is more than 5,000
square feet and has a value of about $700,000.

That's a nice story. I was impressed that the city council went out of
their way to help the Jehovah's Witnesses when they don't even vote.
:-)
Have a great day.

I've seen that done and it's impressive - swarms of people doing their
assigned task. There is something about the number of days to build
and they finish in time to hold services on Sunday. If you have a
chance to drive by from time to time and observe you will be
impressed.
